You may have noticed… well how could you have missed the 2 starburst “MyBlogLog” invite buttons at the top of my pages now. These work on a very basic principal of sales and marketing.

If You Don’t Ask, You Don’t Get

Some people are going to think they are ugly, glaring colors, badly designed (I am not really much of an artist) and probably don’t work to increase joining rate.

I can’t even claim they do work, because although I have had a higher joining rate today compared to other days for the same traffic, a lot of my traffic today has been from a slightly different audience. In fact due to various posts, on different subjects, my traffic comes from different sources all the time.

So unlike most marketers, I am not going to say it has increased my signups by 100% or 300% or even 1000%, because it is not conclusive. The dataset will be too small.

What I have noticed is that the horrible green nasty things managed to remind one regular visitor that he hadn’t joined my community yet. I have a lot more RSS and email subscribers than MyBlogLog community members.
But that one new member after 10+ visits suggests that their might be a benefit in using them.

I am also tracking based on page location and page, and you can even do that with just a small change to a template in WordPress, plus a pro Mybloglog account.

Here is the code I used for the 2 starbursts

<div style="float:left;"><a href='http://www.mybloglog.com/buzz/join_conf.php?ref_id=2006112106033602&ref_method=s&ref_er=left:<?php the_permalink() ?>' title='Join MyBlogLog Community'><img src='http://andybeard.eu/wp-content/uploads/mbl200.gif' alt='Join MyBlogLog Community' border="0" /></a></div>
<div style="float:right;"><a href='http://www.mybloglog.com/buzz/join_conf.php?ref_id=2006112106033602&ref_method=s&ref_er=right:<?php the_permalink() ?>' title='Join MyBlogLog Community'><img src='http://andybeard.eu/wp-content/uploads/mbl200.gif' alt='Join MyBlogLog Community' border="0" /></a></div>

Notice “left:” and “right:” plus a little php for the permalink being used as a long tracking reference. Make sure you change the ID number to your own.
It is not highly accurate, but it does dive me an idea of which page people are clicking on the join button, which at least gives me an idea of traffic source.

Here are a whole load you can use, license is GPL like everything so you can use them wherever you like, modify them etc, though I would love a mention.

If you create some graphics of your own, please ping me so my readers can also come look and possibly use your creations as well.
